By Eric McMillan

If you are wondering about a great vacation, consider taking Gulf of Mexico vacation. The gulf offers a vacation that is only a short drive away for many residents of the southern United States and mexico.

The Gulf of Mexico is a body of water that spans most of eastern Mexico, the states including and between Texas and Florida, just touches northern most Cuba and reaches back to the north east peninsula of Mexico.

This large body of water helps to regulate the temperatures on land and offers opportunity for many water sports throughout the year. Even when temperatures are extremely hot during summers or cold during winters inland, a trip to the gulf can provide relief.

If you are planning a Gulf of Mexico vacation, you need to know that June through November is considered Hurricane season for the area. While this should not stop your vacation plans, you will need to build in the flexibility to avoid problems with bad weather. Most travel establishments do not want you to be caught in a hurricane so they are glad to cancel reservations if the storm is looming.

There are many resort communities located around the gulf, however many are found along Padre Island in Texas. Padre Island offers lots of opportunity for sand and surf during much of the year. South Padre island is a better choice for much of the winter and even early spring as the winds and rain may make the northern part of the island too cold for many activities. Southern Florida is also a great choice for winter vacations.

If you enjoy taking some time for golf on your vacation, you will find that there are many fine golf courses at locations all around almost anywhere you choose to vacation on the gulf. The ocean air makes the temperatures always just perfect for enjoying your favorite sport. The humidity and rains serve to keep courses green and lush most of the time. Since many vacationers choose to drive, you do not even have to worry about checking your clubs at the airport with all the luggage restrictions.

Much of the Gulf shores are very well developed. You will find numerous accommodations as well as charter services that allow for deep sea fishing. There are many fine fish to be caught in the area. Summer months are considered prime times for fishing.

In addition, you will find that the many beaches offer fantastic opportunities to enjoy both the sand and the water. You will find many places that are ideal areas for beachcombing during your Gulf of Mexico Vacation.

If your vacation plans include Mexico, remember that now you must have either a passport or a passport card to cross the border. Since this is a relatively new rule, do not let you plans be spoiled by depending on former rules that allowed travelers to use a driver's license as a form of identification. - 31515
