Miami's Greatest Mystery Is A Tourist Attraction

By Michael Kohler

Just south of Miami Florida a little town called Homestead is one of the most interesting tourist attractions found not only in the state of Florida but also in the world.

This place is called the Coral Castle. It was built by one man over a period of 20 years. His name was Edward Leedskalnin. He dedicated his life to creating this 1100 tons structure of coral to a person that he loved who did not love him.

Ed was engaged to be married to a girl by the name of Agnes. He liked to call her his Sweet 16 because he was 26 years old and she was only 16.

Legend has it that on the day before the wedding, Agnes told Leedskalnin but she did not want to marry him. There are many conjectures regarding why. Some believe that it was because of his lack of education or money.

Whatever the reason was, this was a very life changing event for Ed Leedskalnin. It cost him to pack up and leave his hometown in Latvia and journey across the ocean to Canada to start his new life.

It is said that Edward Leedskalnin wandered about for several years. After making his way to Canada, he then moved down into California and eventually arrived in Texas. He worked several types of jobs including the lumber camps in Canada and California. He is said to have also been part of at least one cattle drive in Texas.

Visitors of coral castle can actually believe that these labor intensive jobs actually helped and prepared to make his 1100 tons structure. What is sad, and even confusing, is that this very strong man almost died from contracting tuberculosis before any of this ever began.

Luckily for Ed he was found by a local realtor that helped him back to good health and recover from the tuberculosis that he had contracted. Ed then purchased a $12 piece of land from the realtor and began to make his famous megalithic structure.

One of the reasons that most immigrants come to America is that they believe that our country is the land of opportunity and that through hard work and determination you can create a successful life of your own. This belief, and his love for his Sweet 16, caused Ed to begin though they Coral Castle.

This area of Florida has several thousand feet of coral extended beneath the topsoil. This provided with plenty of working material to create his coral home which consisted of chairs, beds, and interesting artifacts all made out of coral stone.

The mystery of Ed Leedskalnin is that no one ever found out his secret. No witness ever saw him move a single piece of coral and place or cut it into pieces that they became.

One of Ed's greatest creations is a single piece of coral called the Obelisk which weighs nearly 30 tons, stands 40 feet above the ground, and rests in the 6 foot deep hole. Today, modern engineers and modern equipment would be unable to duplicate what Ed was able to do with simple tools over 70 years ago. His secrets died with him in Miami in'51, secrets that still puzzle modern engineers today.

Therefore, despite his nearly fatal illness, Ed arose from the ashes of his previous life and created the amazing structure that tens of thousands of people visit each and every year. It is well worth taking the time to visit and admire this amazing coral structure created by one man's devotion and love to a woman that did not love him.

For people traveling in the Miami area, the Coral Castle is a must stop must see tourist attraction that is the life's work of one man who used his secret, a secret that has not been lost again. - 31515

Are you half packed for your trip to Bocas Del Toro in Panama? Well, before anything else, there's some congratulating in order. After all, you not only chose one of the best vacation places in Central America, you also picked a nice time to go. Imagine being in a place where you can find the most fabulous beaches in the Caribbean, like the well-known Red Frog Beach (yes, there are still red frogs there, too), where you can scuba, snorkel, kayak, and do whatever you can and want to do in the water, while at the same time being striking distance to extreme sports arenas for mountain biking or just zip-lining through the jungle canopy. The nightlife isn't bad, either. In Bocas Town, you can find good food, dancing, and maybe a few drinks to wrap up the day.

Put another way, Bocas offers everything you would expect to find on an Aruban beach vacation as well as everything you would expect to see at a Costa Rican jungle resort. The best part? Bocas is surprisingly inexpensive. Standard rooms are available for less than $50 a night at quite a few places in Bocas Town, and you'll have to work hard to spend more than $20 on dinner for two.

There is really no need to sell you on the idea of going there, is there? There are, however, some things that you may find useful to know if you're new to Bocas Del Toro:

1) There is a lot of picture-perfect underwater scenery that you can enjoy, and sometimes, memories just don't do these enough justice. Having an underwater camera (even just the disposable ones) will come in handy. You might find a few being sold in the area but these can get pricey, so it would be better to bring your own. It's better to be safe than sorry, so bring an underwater camera.

2) Pack shorts and a good pair of sandals. The main island in Bocas is just a little too small for taxi service, so you can expect to walk quite a bit in and around Bocas Town. North Americans should also remember to bring shorts - the temperature in Bocas hovers around 90 degrees Fahrenheit year round with a fair amount of humidity. The sea breeze keeps things cool at night, but during the day long pants are uncomfortable.

3) Have money to burn (or at least, spend), and US dollars are the way to go. All establishments in Bocas accept U.S. dollars, and the exchange rate is exactly one dollar to one Balboa (not Rocky - that's what the Panamanians call their currency). In other words, Panama uses the U.S. Dollar as the official currency - no exchange needed.

4) No, you don't have to bring bottled water from your home country to Bocas del Toro, but once you get there, it's better to err in the side of caution and always have one with you. These are available everywhere, and the price is pretty low, especially if you consider your health. Tap water in the area comes from rainwater, and though they're generally safe, you'll never know where those clouds have been!

5) All you need is a passport. Anyone visiting Panama from the USA or Canada is automatically granted a 30 day visa upon entering the country with a valid passport. Panama does require that visitors purchase a tourist stamp, which costs $8 to $12 depending on your port of entry. If you're interested in staying more than 30 days, extensions are very easy to come by. Your driver's license is required if you rent a car, but there's little need to do so in Bocas.

6) On beach days, be sure to pack a lunch. When you get to Bocas, make a trip to the store and stock up on some basic foodstuffs before hitting the beaches. Most because can only be reached by boat (technically a water taxi), so you want to bring food with you because there won't be anyone at the beach selling snacks. Always have water with you, and why not pack up some Balboa too (Balboa is a solid local beer in Panama).

7) The two major languages used in Bocas are English and Spanish. If you speak either language, then you're in good shape. If you don't, a phrase book or two would be a good idea.

8) Staying in contact with home is easy. Bocas has multiple internet cafes where computers can be rented for less than $3 per hour. Many of these internet cafes offer free VOIP calls to the USA or Canada, so staying in touch with friends and family is simple. For anyone considering an extended stay, pre-paid cell phones are easy to find.

9) Cross the border and visit Costa Rica. It's not that Costa Rica is very different from Panama (unless of course you go a lot further into the Costa Rican jungles), but a quick hope to Costa Rica is a great way to get another stamp on your passport. Costa Rica is only about an hour away, and there are day tours which will take you into the jungle in Costa Rica. You can be back in Panama by nightfall or the next morning.

10) Pack some extra patience. There's nothing fast-paced about Bocas. No one is in a rush, and everything takes just a little bit longer than it should. Understand that when your waitress ignores you for 5 minutes it's nothing personal or mean-spirited - it's just a different way of living. If you're in a rush you might be disappointed, so be sure to plan for delays. Besides, you're on vacation! Enjoy the island life.

Those are the things that I brought along with me to Bocas Del Toro for my vacation, and it helped me enjoy myself. I hope that these 10 tips will be of help to you too. - 31515

Are Cheap Holidays A Myth

By Craig Walker

If you are considering going on a summer vacation and are concerned about the cost, then you are not unique. Many holidaymakers especially in the current financial climate are concerned about the future and whether they should reserve a summer holiday in advance.

Many individuals get wind about other holidaymakers who have got amazing bargains by booking early or a late deal or getting a holiday cancelled at the last minute. Do these deals genuinely exist or are they just a selling gambit by the vacation firms.

A cheap vacation to one person may not actually be a bargain to someone else. This is where a lot of the issues tend to originate from. Many people make far more than other individuals do so a bargain to them could be a luxury to someone else.

There are many options to help cut the cost of your next summer holiday by searching out for special internet discounts. It is not rare to receive discounts of up to 10% off a holiday simply by reserving direct with the holiday firm online.

Another way to cut costs on the general cost of a family vacation is if the holiday company offers you a free kid place. It is not unusual for a holiday firm to do this specifically in a particular accommodation that they have a lot of rooms in. Normally the accommodation is a family property that offers childrens activities or youngsters clubs to keep the children busy throughout the day.

Pick a popular destination where there is a lot of rivalry between all the holiday firms as this will also help keep the charges down. There is nothing like a bit of rivalry to make the companies fight for you patronage by offering a deduction or a special offer. This can also work in reverse in a location where there is little or no competition there will be no need to offer big discounts.

As with most things you can buy the best option is to always shop around for your summer holiday to make a point you get the best deal possible. - 31515

Wild Wild Africa - Incomparable African Safaris in the Top Game reserves in Tanzania

By Andrew Muigai

Tanzania is a country endowed with an incredibly diverse array of wildlife and it makes for some of the best game viewing safaris in Africa. Below are the top five national parks and game reserves in Tanzania.

Ruaha National Park

Named after the Great Ruaha River, The Ruaha National Park is the second largest national park in Tanzania and the biggest elephant sanctuary in the world. The 12,950 sq km park, located some 128 km from Iringa town, is home to a wide range of wild animals including zebra, greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, impala and giraffe which can be found on the plains stretching from the rivers edge. The Ruaha river hosts numerous hippos and crocodiles and it also draws huge numbers of thirsty water buck, reed buck, leopard, wild dogs, hyena and lions. Indeed Ruaha is unique in that it boasts plant and animal life found in both eastern and southern Africa.

Ruaha's topography is ideal for hiking and walking safaris. In the rainy season between March to April and October to November, the bird population peaks to a high of over 350 bird species - including some Eurasian migrants. Ruaha's climate is hot and dry, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in October. The Ruaha is was until recently totally inaccessible, but there is now a year round road access to the park. From Dar es Salaam, road travel takes 10 hours while a charter flight takes 1 and and half hours. The best time for a safari is over the dry season- May to December.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National park is home to an unrivaled abundance of bird species, making it the greatest birding destination in Tanzania. The park hosts many resident and migratory birds. It is also one of the best places for viewing leopards, which can be spotted in the lush green vegetation. At the grassy shores of Lake Manyara, you can also spot the famous tree-climbing lions. This national park is situated between the walls of the great rift valley - which rise up to 610 meters above from the floor - and Lake Manyara.

The periods between December and February and between August and September constitute the best times for going on safari in Lake Manyara national park. However, it is still possible to see animals throughout the year. Most parts of the park are easily accessible, making it possible for you to see all its major attractions in two hours. Lake Manyara National park has three habitats: groundwater green forests, acacia woodlands, and open floodplains.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is part of Tanzania's famous northern safari circuit. Occupying about 2,600 sq km, the park is named after the Tarangire river. It has a a high concentration of wild animals including elephants and over 570 species of birds, rendering it a haven for birdwatching lovers.

If you want to visit Tarangire National Park, the best time to go would be during the dry season from June to September. During this period, wild animals tend to congregate at the banks of river Tarangire as they seek to quench their thirst. Likewise, the dry season means less thick vegetation cover, increasing your chances of seeing more animals. It is also in Tarangire that you stand the best chance of spotting pythons because they have a habit of climbing trees here.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Located towards the north of Tanzania on an area of over 7,000 square miles the Ngorongoro conservation area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in'79. The park joins up with the Serengeti to the north-west and it is through here that wildebeest horde through during their world famous migration from the Masai Mara to Serengeti, then to Ngorongoro.

At the center of this conservation area lies the 264 sq km Ngorongoro crater, whose floor is inhabited by a great array of wildlife. Since the crater provides one of the greatest and very satisfying game watching experience, it is not a big surprise that it remains one of the most popular Tanzania destination for wildlife safaris.

When you visit Ngorongoro conservation area, you are likely to experience both surprise and shock, as you get to hear lions' roars echoed off the crater walls, and also spot prides of the lazy king of the jungle idling under the shades of trees. You will also see herds of many herbivores like zebras, antelopes and gazelles grazing in the river shores, as well as huge herds of elephants roaming from one corner of the park to the other. Birdwatching is a good adventure at Ngorongoro. Lake Ndutu, for instance, has a huge population of birds that makes it popular among birding enthusisats. Some of the common birds species around the lake include ducks, flamingos and stocks.

Serengeti National Park

The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word "Siringit" meaning unending plains - aptly describing the open grassy plains that make up the national park. The 12,950 sq km national park is part of an ecosysytem that spans across the Kenya - Tanzania border into the Masai Mara game reserve. Serengeti's diverse habitat enables the park to support more than 30 species of large mammals and about 500 species of birds.

The "great wildebeest migration" takes place in the Serengeti. This event is the largest and longest overland migration of mammals in the world, earning it a recognition as the world's most spectacular wildlife show. Together with the mighty Victoria falls and the Ngorongoro crater, the migration is also recognized as one of the ten natural wonders of travel in the world.

The great wildebeest migration from Serengeti to the Mara generally takes place between July and August. It is however impossible to correctly predict its timing as it is largely dependent on the rain and pasture availability patterns. The reverse journey of the migration happens around October. About 2 million herbivores participate in the migration, with some of the most interesting moments being when they cross the Mara river in pursuit of greener pastures.

To get to Serengeti, you can travel both by road or by flight. It takes about 8 hours by road from Arusha, 320km away. By air, you can take a flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha to Kirawira airstrip or Seronera airstrip or any of the other airstrips in Serengeti. - 31515

Mind Your P's and Q's, Monterey Style

By Myer Thompson

Between the poles of San Francisco and Los Angeles, California doesn't have much to offer. It's rolling hills, mountains, and that sweet smell of manure. Ah, the Central Valley, fields of food, and slaughterhouses. You could drive miles and miles and wonder why you ever bothered with the late, great Golden State. Buck up, little lad or lady, and steer for the coast.

It fancies itself "the Cradle of History" but I suppose that's just California jive. By "history" they must mean California history, which is respectable and at times nifty, but it's a far cry from the "Cradle of Civilization" Baghdad can boast of being. California on one hand and all of human civilization on the other -- it's tight.

From ship to shore, Monterey has gone the way of most of coastal California. Though it had the distinction of being the capital of Spanish and Mexican California, it has since become a curious tourist stop for people who dig on marine life. From a thriving fishing and canning Mecca, it has become a groovy kind of academic hub, specializing in linguistics studies.

Then, there's the cultural clout and cache the city still carries around like a locket. Of course, if you're savvy to the music scene, then you know Monterey vis-a-vis the defunct Pop Festival in '67 and the on-going Jazz Festival. Woodstock gets the glory, but Monterey set the template. Yeah, to have been around in the late Sixties, tripping the light fantastic to the likes of the Who, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding.

If you're into getting deep, charter yourself a little dingy and head out a few miles offshore. The yawning Monterey Canyon is the deepest underwater canyon in the Pacific. Of course, it'd help if you had some scuba savvy and a cozy little room in a Monterey hotel to recover in. Hey, be sure you curl up with your favorite Steinbeck novel in homage to the town the man couldn't leave. - 31515

How To Treat Serious Illness During Caribbean Holidays

By Edward Watkinson

Although people plan their annual holiday after careful planning, and after much thought, so that they can have the best time, but sometimes these holidays are spoiled due to some unforeseen reasons. Illness, and misfortune are two things that you cannot avoid no matter ho hard you try. However, the one thing that you can do is to keep your mind prepared for any type of circumstances.

There are certain places where tourists often become ill, because of the climate changes, and due to taking unhealthy foods. Different gastric illnesses, salmonella, and E Coli are some diseases that often catch the tourists during their holidays. Therefore, tourists have to be very careful in this regard, be it a visit Caribbean, or some other destination.

One should keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure. It is always better if you take care of yourself, and your loved ones rather than waiting to take measures after getting an illness. However, if you become ill even after taking lots of care about your health, you need to take some steps to recover from that illness. In Caribbean, most of resorts and hotels have their own doctors, but in case they are not available, you will definitely find one in the nearby area.

If a tour representative is assisting you, then you can ask him about a good doctor in the area. Even if you are unable to get in touch with him, then you must ask the hotel or the resort authority about some good doctor.

Although you have to incur expenses at the spot, but when you get back you can claim these expenses, so you must carefully keep all the receipts. If you have a travel insurance policy, you must check if it would fly you home for the treatment. If you have minor illness, it is quite possible that it will not cover it, so you should better get the treatment where you are staying. In case you have some serious illness, or some bad injuries, then it is very important that you must rush back home to get treatment at the hospital near to your home.

If you have any doubt regarding the hygiene of the food, then you should not take it, in fact you should lodge a complaint against it.

Taking Vacations In Birmingham And Where To Stay

By Karl Fraser

In more recent years there has been a move away from the usual seaside vacation in favour of something a little bit more unusual, such as a city break in an industrial town. During this time of economic downturn it is important to try to save cash where we can so many tourists are choosing to arrange their own vacations rather than going with a package deal. Visiting a city is often far cheaper than visiting a highly popular resort as it is often possible to find budget hotels not too far from first class five star hotels. Another way to save some cash is to visit a country where your local currency is stronger and with this in mind I wish to introduce you to the wonderful city of Birmingham in England, in the United Kingdom. The British pound is still rather weak against such currencies as the Euro and the Dollar so it makes it viable, now more than ever, to take a vacation in the UK and Birmingham is one of the most fascinating cities in England.

Birmingham has an excellent collection of places to visit and things to do including some highly informative and equally interesting museums and art galleries, for example the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the Thinktank in the Eastside. The city of Birmingham also possesses a large number of square kilometres of parks and open spaces, Sutton Park being the largest with 2,400 acres making it the very largest urban nature reserve in the whole of Europe.

Some Interesting Places To Stay In Birmingham

Macdonald Burlington Hotel

The Burlington Hotel is found within a two minute walk of New Street station and it is right by a 2,000 space car park making it an excellent place to stay right in the heart of the city. This 4 star hotel offers all the modern facilities you would expect along with a most excellent service which is becoming increasingly rare these days.

The Holiday Inn

Offering superbly priced 3 star hotel accommodation in the very centre of the city is the Holiday Inn. Offering a range of rooms from the basic to the executive rooms (which feature air conditioning) this hotel is excellent for business visitors.

The Superbly Titled Staying Cool at The Rotunda

The studio serviced apartments of Staying Cool at The Rotunda are in an incredible style and will appeal strongly to those who like to stay in boutique hotels. Rather than being expensive Staying Cool at The Rotunda offers four and five star accommodation at a surprisingly low price.

The above mentioned hotels are just three of a great many, and widely varied, number of hotels available in Birmingham. Accommodation ranges from small family run guest houses offering friendly, and homely, bed and breakfast to some of the finest luxury hotels and apartments in England. Whatever your budget you are sure to find accommodation to match, or go well beyond, your expectations. - 31515

Learn How To Find Cheap Airline Tickets

By Morten Elm

Finding a cheap airlines ticket is a matter of two things: planning and flexibility. Combining those two elements can save you a lot of money.

You can save a lot of money by being flexible. Instead of going to a place in the high season, you can often wait a few months for the low season and get tickets for a much lower price. This way you can also save money on food, accommodation, sightseeing etc.

In is also not unimportant which day of the week you travel. If you are going to a typical business destination (like Brussels), where all business people goes to on the weekdays, it is cheaper to travel in the weekend. And if you are visiting a holiday destination, you can save a lot of money by traveling there on a weekday.

No matter of which day and month you choose, there are locations, there are always expensive to fly to. If that is the case, you can ask yourself, if you can find another place with similar attraction; but with a much lower air ticket price.

Finding cheap last minute offers are possible, but in most cases you will save more money by planning well ahead. Tests have shown that you find the lowest prices combined with the highest flexibility, if you book your ticket four weeks before you need it.

The Internet is you best friend, when it comes to find the cheapest air tickets. Enter your preferred location and dates in one of the many airline ticket search engines. When you have found a good price, try to change the dates a little (e.g. from weekend to weekday) to see, if you can get a better price.

After you have found the perfect sets of location and dates, you can try to do the same search in another airline ticket search engine. You can also try to look directly on the airline website. Both methods can give you even cheaper prices.

So when trying to find the cheapest airline tickets, you should be flexible with the location and the arrival and departure day. Go in the low season on the right day; or visit some less popular places.

And remember to do some planning beforehand using your favorite airline ticket search engines. - 31515
